Ukraine won European Union awards in the field of cultural heritage

On June 30, the European Commission and Europa Nostra announced the winners of the 2022 European Heritage Awards/Europa Nostra Awards, funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe program.

This year, marking the 20th anniversary of Europe’s most prestigious heritage awards, 30 outstanding heritage achievements from 18 European countries have been honored in five categories.

Andrew’s Church in Kyiv won in the category Conservation and Adaptive Reuse.

This comprehensive and well-documented restoration returned to the people of Ukraine a monument of great cultural and spiritual value.

The Vyshyvanka Day, which began as a student festival, has turned into an annual holiday celebrated at the international level and it helps to preserve the iconic Ukrainian vyshyvanka as an important element of the heritage of the Ukrainian people. That is why this project received an award in the category Citizens Engagement & Awareness-raising.

It should be noted that the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards were launched in 2002 by the European Commission. The Awards identify and promote best practices in the conservation of cultural heritage and measures to increase public awareness of Europe’s cultural heritage. The winners are selected according to the 5 categories:

  • Conservation and Adaptive Reuse
  • Research
  • Education, Training, Skills
  • Citizens Engagement and Awareness-Raising
  • Heritage Champions
