It is the 14-th day of the bloody war in Ukraine, which was started by the Russian Federation.
Every day Russian soldiers ruin out cities and towns, brazenly shell residence buildings, destroy the key objects of critical, civil and social infrastructure. They have ruined hospitals, kindergartens, educational and research facilities. Scientific institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv and other cities of Ukraine have been damaged by Russian bomb attacks.
The invaders are resorting to the ways of waging war that are prohibited by international humanitarian law. Russia has unfolded a war against the civilian population of Ukraine. Hundreds of localities are completely blocked and their inhabitants are living in a humanitarian crisis – there is no food, water, electricity, natural gas, heating, no telephone communication. People have to hide in basements and bomb shelters for several days in a row. Peaceful civilians and innocent children die. Escaping from Russian missiles and occupants, two million Ukrainians have left their homes and had to flee to safer regions of their country or to neighboring countries.
All that is the result of horrendous massive air raids, the attacks of ballistic and cruise missiles launched from the territory of Russia and Belarus.
The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine shares and supports the call of our country leaders, millions of the citizens of Ukraine and other countries, who have already signed the international petition, and appeals to NATO member states to close the sky over Ukraine.
The delays of the decision are every day increasing the horrible price for our nation and the whole civilized world.
President of the National Academy of Sciences of UkraineNAS
