Two-day EU summit begins in Brussels today

A two-day summit of EU heads of state and government will start in Brussels today, with the key topics being Russian aggression and granting Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates for EU membership.

That’s according to a statement posted on the website of the European Council, Ukrinform reports.

The document states that EU leaders will discuss the latest developments in relation to Russia’s war against Ukraine, including its impact on the global food security crisis. They will also discuss continued EU support to Ukraine, which comprises economic, military, political and humanitarian support.

The European Council will discuss the membership applications from Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia as a separate issue. The statement recalls that Ukraine applied for EU membership on February 28, 2022. Georgia and Moldova both applied for EU membership on March 3, 2022. The European Commission issued its opinion on the countries’ applications on June 17, 2022.
