TIB – Leibniz Information Center for University Libraries (Germany) is organizing a panel discussion on “Perspectives on Academic Freedom” to be part of the 3rd International Conference “Open Science and Innovation in Ukraine 2024” (#OSICU2024). The event is part of the German Year of Science 2024 – Academic Freedom and is organized with the financial support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
During the panel discussion, key researchers and experts in the field of philosophy of science and higher education from Ukraine and Germany will discuss topical issues related to academic freedom and compare the scientific systems of both countries. The event aims to explore how academic freedom is realized in different contexts and what it means for the development of scientific communities in Ukraine and Germany. The event will include a two-hour online panel, which will include an introductory presentation on the current state and historical development of academic freedom in Ukraine and Germany by the professors:
- Karsten Schubert (Associate Research Fellow, Department of Political Theory, Faculty of Social Sciences, Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany)
- Serhiy Kvit (President of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukraine).
The panel discussion will be attended by professors from the German academic society: Thorsten Wilholt (Professor at the Institute of Philosophy, Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany) and Amrei Bahr (Junior Professor of Philosophy of Technology and Information, University of Stuttgart, Germany), and from the Ukrainian side, professors: Anatoliy Oleksiyenko (Professor, Co-Director of the Center for Research on Leadership and Policy in Higher Education, Canada/Hong Kong/Ukraine) and Professor Olena Orzhel (Leading Researcher at the Department of University-Community Interaction, Institute of Higher Education, National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Ukraine).
The panel discussion “Perspectives on Academic Freedom” is a unique opportunity for scholars, academics, and anyone interested in the development of academic freedom in Ukraine and abroad. The participants of the event will discuss how academic freedom is implemented in different countries, how we can protect it for future generations, and what it means for the academic communities of Ukraine and Germany.
