During the occupation of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone Russian troops have destroyed the unique laboratories of the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine located in Chornobyl.
The roof, windows, doors, and other property of almost all laboratory and office premises, as well as dormitories for scientists were damaged. Laboratory furniture, metal safes are broken. Most of the unique scientific laboratory equipment and measuring instruments have been looted or destroyed. System units, computer servers, office equipment were stolen, measuring devices were broken or destroyed. Garages with vehicles used to transport scientists to the research sites throughout the exclusion zone, as well as specialized equipment, tools, and automotive fuel were looted.
The Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants (ISP NPP) of the NAS of Ukraine is the only institution in the world that provides scientific research of the state of the Shelter object fuel containing materials, provides scientific and technical support of the Shelter object transformation into an ecologically safe system, nuclear power units decommissioning, as well as spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management at the Chornobyl NPP site and the exclusion zone.
The research has been carried out due to the presence in the structure of the Institute of specialized laboratories of radiochemical, spectrometric, materials science, nuclear and radiation safety, as well as radioecological laboratory. Currently, the work of these laboratories in Chornobyl has been suspended and needs to be resumed.
Researchers of the ISP NPP of the NAS of Ukraine are making great efforts to bring information on the destruction and looting of the scientific laboratories to their colleagues from foreign scientific institutions with a request to provide technical and financial assistance for their restoration. The state budget of Ukraine at this difficult time is aimed at solving the issues of defense of our state, and after the victory it will be aimed at the restoration of the country’s infrastructure.
It is for these reasons that scientists from the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine have created a CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION “CHARITY FOUNDATION “CHORNOBYL NUCLEAR SAFETY SCIENCE FUND” that with the aid of our unindifferent international partners and other benefactors will solve the issue of restoration of the Institute’s laboratories.
On behalf of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences, I appeal to the world scientific community, heads of scientific organizations and relevant scientific foundations to provide financial and technical assistance for the restoration of the buildings, laboratories, office and technical equipment of the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine in Chornobyl.
I believe that your unindifference and active citizenship will make it possible to restore the research laboratories of the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine, and Ukrainian scientists will be able to continue important research tasks and gain new knowledge that will help to transform the Shelter object into an ecologically safe system.
