The UN adopted a resolution on overcoming the environmental consequences of the war

The European Economic Commission of the UN adopted the resolution “Economic and social consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine” regarding the restoration of the country and overcoming the environmental consequences of the war.

The resolution was supported by 40 countries out of 56 present at the 70th UNECE session in Geneva, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources reports on Facebook. It is noted that the participants of the session condemned Russian aggression and the complicity of Belarus. In addition, the participants confirmed the previous decisions of the UNECE that the aggressor country cannot nominate its representatives for leadership positions in the Commission and submit proposals for voting.

The message emphasized that the UNECE secretariat will continue to provide assistance to Ukraine in recovery and overcoming the consequences of Russian aggression, namely: economic; environmental; infrastructure; energy; social.

Serhiy Vlasenko, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, who directly participated in the event, emphasized that the main goals of the UNECE are: promoting the economic development and integration of Europe; increasing the level of European economic activity; preservation and strengthening of economic relations between countries in the region. He noted that the achievement of these goals was seriously undermined by Russia’s targeted attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, violations of human rights and humanitarian law, illegal actions that caused an unprecedented crisis of forced migrants and exacerbated the world food crisis.

“The destructive influence of Russia’s aggression is felt throughout Europe and the entire world. We call on the member states of the UNECE to take a decisive position in support of the UN Charter and the principles of the EEC, as well as to take action against Russia’s violations of the Commission’s mandate,” Vlasenko said before voting in support of the resolution.
