Denys Shmyhal: The autonomy of universities must be inviolable

Оn Friday, February 4, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal met with representatives of the student coucil of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

The Head of Government listened to the students, who voiced the problematic issues of the university and submitted the list of requirements to the Cabinet of Ministers.

“I have always been and will be on the side of Ukrainian students. The Ministry of Education and Science has already revoked its order to re-run for president of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The Government does not interfere in the internal matters of universities, as the autonomy of universities must be inviolable. Any internal conflicts must be resolved without the intervention of third parties,” Denys Shmyhal stressed.

The participants of the meeting agreed that the requirements of NaUKMA students and academic staff would be submitted in the manner prescribed by law. The relevant authorities will study the facts and decisions will be taken based on the results of the inspection.

The day before, on February 3, a meeting took place between the Prime Minister, the leadership of the Verkhovna Rada and the Ministry of Education and Science with representatives of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and student council, during which the parties discussed the situation with the competition for the president of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
