Energy efficient lighting: saving, economy, safety

Nothing should stop the development of the economy and innovations of the country. Especially if it comes to “green energy”. The project “Energy-saving high-power and super-power LED lighting systems powered with renewable energy sources ” developed by scientists from V.E. Lashkaryov Institute of Semiconductor Physics NAS of Ukraine is devoted to such innovations. The project had won the call «Science for Human Security and Society» of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine and received funding in the amount of 3,7 million UAH.

The project supervisor is Victor Sorokin, a corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the Optoelectronics Department of the Institute. – The main goal of the project is the developing and using lighting systems through renewable energy sources – he said.

Solar photovoltaic power plants are already used to generate electricity for industrial purposes in our country. Ukraine’s photovoltaic potential is extremely promising and exceeds even the potential of the Germany – European leader in the field of photovoltaics.

During the implementation of the project, scientists have developed high-power LED lighting systems with combined power supply – from solar panels and the general power supply network. These systems can run continuously for 100-120 thousand hours (ie 12 years!).

Continuous operation will be provided by powerful LEDs and efficient cooling systems based on two-phase heat dissipation devices (heat pipes). – New electronic control systems for lighting fixtures will also allow to abandon traditional energy storage devices (batteries), which have low reliability and short service life – said Victor.

According to scientists, using of lighting systems with combined power supply will increase energy efficiency by at least 20 percent! So, the introduction of such lighting systems is cost-effective. In addition, reducing energy consumption at large enterprises will help to improve the environmental situation in the country’s industrial areas.

The team that implemented the project has extensive experience in cooperation with companies that are members of the Association of Manufacturers of LED Technology in Ukraine. Scientists are confident that the design and technological solutions developed with the help of NRFU grant funding will also be implemented in many sectors of our country’s economy.

– I would advise scientists who plan to take part in the NRFU calls to look for topics that are important, first of all, for the economy of Ukraine – Viktor added. – “Science plus industry” is the formula for success of the best research teams!
