Some 89% of Ukrainians want to see Ukraine as part of the North Atlantic Alliance.
That’s according to a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in May and early June, Ukrinform reports.
According to the study, the absolute majority in all regions of Ukraine support such a step: from 79% in the east to 93% in the west.
At the same time, for only 18% of respondents, it would be acceptable that Ukraine refuses to join NATO for the sake of peace, and for 76%, such a price is unacceptable.
In May 2022, 39% of respondents insisted on Ukraine’s joining NATO, and 42% considered it acceptable to receive “security guarantees” instead, KIIS said.
However, by May 2023, public opinion had noticeably changed – the share of those who insist on membership in NATO increased to 58%. At the same time, the share of those for whom “security guarantees” would be acceptable shrank to 29%. In all regions, more respondents insist on Ukraine joining the military alliance.
The KIIS conducted its own survey May 26 through June 5. A total of 1,029 phone interviews were conducted with adult residents of territories controlled by the Ukrainian authorities. The poll’s margin of error under normal circumstances does not exceed 3.4%.
KIIS also conducted a survey commissioned by NDI. It took place on May 10-21 using the method of telephone interviews. A total of 2,509 interviews were conducted with adult residents of territories controlled by the Ukrainian government. The poll’s margin of error under normal circumstances does not exceed 2.4%.
